From Grandmother's Room to the International Market - The Rise of Under Armour

In 1996, Kevin Plank, a college football player, founded his first shirt and company in his grandmother's basement with $17,000 in seed money he earned through his part-time college job. He has always been looking for football clothing that meets his requirements - because no brand of sportswear has done that before. From then on, the founder wrote Nike CEO Phil Knight a card every Christmas saying, “Dear Mr. Knight, you don't know us yet, but you will hear from us one day.” In 2005, the international rise of began Under Armour, also in retail. The US sports brand originally started with the production of shoes, clothing for martial arts and underwear and then expanded its product portfolio to include casual wear such as shirts and hoodies, shoes and lifestyle accessories such as caps. In the sportswear scene, Under Armor was the first manufacturer of body-hugging thermal clothing, which is why competitors such as Nike and Reebok had to follow suit with their products. Temperature-regulating clothing and underwear formed the unique selling point of the Under Armor brand. In June 2006, Iraqi and Afghan soldiers advertised temperature-regulating Under Armor underwear for high temperatures for the first time. In May 2008, Under Armor created its first athletic shoe and was featured in its Super Bowl ad campaign that same year. Under Armor was also the official sponsor of Hannover 96 from 2008 to 2011 and a sponsor of FC St. Pauli from 2016 to 2020. Under Armor also outfitted some US universities and basketball player Stephen Curry, who is under contract with the brand.
