By now everyone has probably come across the term. But what is behind “vintage sportswear” and what different types are there? The term "vintage sports wear" describes the comeback of former sports from the 40s and 50s in the 80s and 90s . There are basically 2 major groups: US Sportswear and European Sportswear . The countries are of course shaped by very different sports...
US sportswear
In the USA, basketball , ice hockey and football are preferably played and celebrated. Therefore, the NBA , NFL and NHL also represent the leagues with the largest market worldwide. Each of the three leagues has its own clothing with decades-old origins. However, the three sports all have one type of clothing in common - fan articles in the form of college jackets , hoodies , sweaters , track jackets , T-shirts , jerseys , etc. with an imprint or a patch of the logo. In addition, of course, there is the concept of “ college and high school ” that is typical for the USA. Each college and high school has its own teams that compete in their respective sports (mainly football and basketball). Custom college and high school attire and dress codes are a tradition in America. However, it is important to note that school uniforms and university dress codes such as a UCLA (University of California) hoodie do not count as vintage sportswear , whereas a UCLA Bruins hoodie (University of California basketball team) does count as sportswear!
Many colleges also have volleyball, lacrosse or athletics departments , which in turn also have their own team clothing . The biggest sponsors of the team clothing are brands like N ike , Adidas ,Starter , Logo 7, Russell Athletic , Reebok , Majestics, Mitchell & Ness - and many more.
European sportswear
In Europe, on the other hand, football dominates and, related to this, clothing consists mainly of training jackets . Here the main outfitters are Nike , Adidas , Kappa , Fila , Umbro , Puma , Reebok and Lotto .
Olympic sportswear
Apart from these 2 bubbles, there are of course other sportswear items, such as those from the Olympic scene. From 90s Olympic merchandise, the clothing from the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta in the form of sweaters, T-shirts and jerseys is a popular piece in the vintage area .
In addition to Olympic merch, clothing from the sports areas of boxing and swimming, which were already common at the time, are known in the vintage scene. Because of Olympic and sporting events , people started to be interested in the typical clothes like track jackets.
However, vintage sportswear is no longer just sports fashion , but has since made its way towards vintage street style after a steep trend - long live vintage streetwear! Influential rap personalities of the 80s and 90s, such as Jay-Z or LL Cool J, were also significantly involved in this trend.
